PM Wong warns AI could remove the entry-level work that trains young employees

Speaking at DBS’s Asia Future Forward conference on 12 October, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the government worries that as AI takes over routine tasks such as note-taking and drafting, young workers may lose the on-the-job learning those tasks used to provide. He said the government is reviewing how young staff are trained and mentored across sectors and is looking at whether new schemes are needed to push employers to keep developing junior talent while they adopt AI. He also cited an April MOM finding that among firms using AI, 6.2% had cut headcount and 8.5% had slowed hiring.
