How to Explain a Career Gap to Employers

· Keith Kwai

The gap matters less than how confidently you can talk about it — here’s a structure that works.

Name the timeframe and reason plainly, in one sentence, then move straight to relevance: what you learned, maintained, or built during that time that connects to the role. A gap spent upskilling, freelancing, or caregiving all have a version of this — the key is having the connecting sentence ready rather than leaving the interviewer to assume the worst.

On the resume itself, a short line under the gap (“career break — family caregiving”) usually reads better than leaving it unexplained and hoping no one notices; unexplained gaps invite more scrutiny than acknowledged ones.
