The difference between a rough patch and a real signal to move — and how to tell which one you’re in.
A rough patch is usually tied to a specific project, manager, or season and has a visible end. A real signal to move tends to be structural: your role hasn’t changed in years despite asking, your growth has stalled while peers advance, or the company’s direction no longer matches what you want to be known for.
Before deciding, have the direct conversation you may be avoiding — with your manager, about what’s actually possible where you are. If the honest answer is “not much, not soon,” that’s the real signal, not the frustration itself.
