How to Talk About Why You’re Leaving Your Job
· Keith Kwai
The most common interview trap, and a framework for answering it honestly without damaging your case.
Whatever the real reason, frame your answer around what you’re moving toward, not what you’re escaping. “I’m looking for more ownership over strategy, which this role offers” lands better than any version of a complaint about your current employer — even a fair one.
If the real reason is a difficult manager, a stalled promotion, or a company in decline, you can still be honest without being negative: name the situation factually in one sentence, then pivot immediately to what you’re seeking instead. Interviewers are listening for whether you’d speak about them the same way in two years.
