Preparing for a Panel Interview: A Practical Guide
· Keith Kwai
Multiple interviewers change the dynamic. Here’s how to manage the room, not just the questions.
Before the interview, find out who’s on the panel and what each person’s function is — a hiring manager, a peer, and HR are each listening for something different, and knowing which is which lets you weight your answers accordingly. During the interview, address your answer primarily to whoever asked, but glance around the group as you speak so no one feels ignored.
When two panellists disagree or ask overlapping questions, treat it as useful information rather than a trap — it often reveals real tension on the team, which is worth understanding either way. Close by asking one question that speaks to the group as a whole, not just the most senior person in the room.
