A Finance Director CV is a business document first, a career history second. The hiring decision at this level is made by CEOs and boards who want to know whether you can be trusted with the financial health of the organisation. That is the frame everything else fits inside.
What makes a strong Finance Director CV
Commercial judgement, not just technical accuracy
Technical finance competence is assumed at Director level. What separates candidates is evidence of commercial judgement — decisions made under uncertainty, capital allocation choices, financial positions taken and defended.
Show your influence on business decisions
A Finance Director who only reports numbers is a senior accountant. Show where your financial analysis changed or validated a strategic decision: an acquisition, a market exit, a capital raise, a cost restructuring.
Regulatory and governance credibility is non-negotiable
Singapore’s listed and regulated companies need a Finance Director who understands MAS requirements, SGX obligations, IFRS, and corporate governance frameworks. If relevant, show this explicitly.
Team leadership at scale matters
The size and structure of the finance team you led, how you developed it, and how you managed the function through change or growth — this is leadership evidence that belongs on a Finance Director’s CV.
What to do
- Lead with the scale of financial responsibility: P&L size, balance sheet, budget managed
- Show at least one significant financial decision you led and its outcome
- Demonstrate audit and board reporting experience with named bodies where appropriate
- Include experience with capital markets, debt, or equity if applicable
- Show cross-functional influence — how finance drove decisions in operations, commercial, or strategy
What to avoid
- Fill a Finance Director CV with accounting tasks rather than financial leadership
- Ignore the external-facing dimension: banks, auditors, regulators, investors
- Write generic statements like ‘ensured financial accuracy’ in a Director-level role
- Leave out board or audit committee exposure if you have it
- Bury your commercial impact in the third paragraph
What a weak CV looks like
- A technical accounting CV with a Director title on it
- Financial scale (P&L, headcount, budget) mentioned only in passing
- No evidence of strategic financial influence at all
- A career narrative that reads as progression through technical complexity, not business leadership
