Business Development Director Resume Sample
· Keith Kwai
Business Development Director is one of the most misused titles in the Singapore market. The CVs that stand out are the ones that show genuine origination — new markets opened, new revenue streams created, strategic partnerships built from zero.
What makes a strong Business Development Director CV
Origination versus management is the key distinction
A BD Director who managed existing accounts is a Key Account Director. The BD Director role is specifically about finding and building new business. Make it absolutely clear which you have done, and quantify both if applicable.
Show strategic thinking through commercial outcomes
Market entry decisions, partnership structures, channel strategies — describe the logic behind the approach and what it produced. Anyone can claim strategic thinking. Few can show it translated into revenue.
Geographic or vertical scope matters in Singapore
ASEAN business development, China-facing partnerships, regional expansion — the scope of your BD work is a significant differentiator. Name the markets and describe the complexity.
Long sales cycles require evidence of pipeline management
BD deals often take twelve to thirty-six months to close. Show how you manage long-cycle opportunities, how you keep momentum, and how you balance pipeline development with closing.
What to do
- Lead with the biggest deal or market you opened, with a revenue figure
- Show the full arc of a BD win: how the opportunity was identified, how it was pursued, how it was closed
- Name senior-level stakeholders you have engaged — C-suite, government, regional heads
- Demonstrate ability to structure commercial agreements, not just initiate conversations
- Show what happened after the deal — did it scale, did it renew, did it open further opportunities
What to avoid
- Use ‘developed strategic relationships’ without defining what those relationships produced
- Conflate account management with business development
- Claim market entry experience without showing the market was genuinely new
- Describe networking and conferences as core BD activities
- Leave deal sizes ambiguous
What a weak CV looks like
- A career narrative of meetings and relationships with no commercial outcomes attached
- BD wins described by deal name rather than deal value or market significance
- No evidence of how BD opportunities were sourced — cold outreach, referrals, inbound, partnerships
- Senior title with junior-level commercial evidence
