General Manager Resume Sample
· Keith Kwai
General Manager is a title that can mean almost anything — which is exactly why a strong GM CV must immediately define the scope, scale, and nature of the P&L or business unit managed. Without that context, nothing else on the page is assessable.
What makes a strong General Manager CV
P&L ownership is the defining claim of a GM role
If you held a genuine GM role, you owned a P&L or budget of significant size. State the revenue, margin, or budget figure early. If you did not own a P&L, your title may be Manager but your CV should not claim General Manager responsibilities.
Show how the business or unit performed during your tenure
Revenue growth, market share gain, profitability improvement, headcount development — the GM is accountable for all of this. Pick the two or three most significant performance indicators and show what happened.
Cross-functional accountability distinguishes the GM
Unlike a functional head, a GM is responsible for all functions within their scope. Show that you made decisions across commercial, operations, finance, and people — not just in your functional background.
Stakeholder management above and below
Board or regional management reporting above, functional leadership below, external commercial relationships across — the GM lives at multiple levels simultaneously. Show this complexity.
What to do
- State the business unit size: revenue, headcount, geography
- Show performance trend during your tenure — start state and end state
- Demonstrate decisions made across multiple functions
- Include external commercial responsibility: key customers, partners, or regulatory bodies
- Show what happened to the team and capability under your leadership
What to avoid
- Use General Manager as a title for a role that was functionally bounded
- Leave P&L size and performance entirely out of the CV
- Describe a GM role as a collection of functional responsibilities
- Write a narrative that suggests the business ran itself and you supervised it
- Ignore the strategic context: what the business faced and how you responded
What a weak CV looks like
- A GM CV with no P&L, no headcount, and no business performance data
- A career that escalates from Manager to Senior Manager to GM with identical role descriptions throughout
- No cross-functional evidence — only the candidate’s functional background applied at senior level
- Outcomes framed as activities: ‘managed a team of 45’ rather than what that team produced
