Accountant Resume Sample

· Keith Kwai

Singapore’s accounting market is competitive and qualification-heavy. A strong Accountant CV uses qualifications as a baseline and builds above it — showing the depth of accounting work, the quality of judgement applied, and the business context it served.

What makes a strong Accountant CV

Full-cycle ownership matters more than task completion

Hiring managers want to know whether you have owned an accounting process from start to close — AP through to reconciliation, payroll through to statutory filing, GL through to financial statements. Show end-to-end, not just one step.

Qualifications are expected at junior level, not differentiating at senior level

ACCA, CPA, CA — these open doors early in a career. At three to five years of experience, what differentiates candidates is what they produced with those qualifications: the quality and complexity of accounting work done independently.

Industry context is meaningful

Accounting in a listed company, a regulated financial institution, a manufacturing firm, and a startup each require different knowledge and tolerance for ambiguity. Make your industry experience visible — it matters to hiring managers in Singapore more than candidates assume.

Singapore regulatory knowledge should be explicit

GST, withholding tax, IRAS compliance, SSRS, IFRS — the specific regulatory environment you have worked in should be named, not implied.

What to do

  • Specify the accounting cycle and reporting entities you have handled
  • Include audit experience — both supporting external auditors and conducting internal reviews
  • Show any reporting you produced independently: management accounts, board packs, tax schedules
  • Mention system migrations, process improvements, or automation you contributed to
  • Include professional development: CPE hours, new qualifications, professional memberships

What to avoid

  • Lead with qualifications before work experience in a mid-career CV
  • Describe accounting work so generically that it could apply to any company in any industry
  • Ignore team or junior staff oversight if you have any
  • Use acronyms without confirming context — IFRS, SSRS, and IRAS mean different things to different readers
  • Write ‘handled month-end close’ when you can describe exactly what that entailed

What a weak CV looks like

  • Qualifications section as long as the experience section for someone five years into their career
  • Experience described at a task level with no accountability or outcome attached
  • No indication of the scale or complexity of the entities handled
  • A profile summary that lists accounting software as a key competency
