Salary Negotiation After a Job Offer in Singapore
· Keith Kwai
Most offers have room to move. Here’s how to find out how much, without risking the offer itself.
Respond with enthusiasm first, then ask for the negotiation as its own step: “I’m excited about this offer — could we discuss the base salary before I confirm?” This keeps the relationship warm while opening the door, instead of leading with a number that can read as a condition.
Anchor your counter to market data and your current package, not to what you’d simply like to earn. Most Singapore employers expect a counter within 5 to 15 percent of the initial offer — asking for meaningfully more without justification is what actually risks the offer, not the act of negotiating itself.
