How to make a genuine case for a role you’re not an obvious fit for on paper.
Lead with the closest adjacent experience you do have, and be explicit about the connection instead of hoping the reader draws it themselves. “I haven’t managed a P&L directly, but I built the forecasting model my last manager used to run one” does more work than silence on the gap.
Then show you’ve done the homework a typical applicant hasn’t — a specific observation about the company’s challenges or direction. It signals genuine interest, which is often what tips a hiring manager toward taking a chance on non-traditional experience.
