Chief Operations Officer Resume Sample

· Keith Kwai

A COO CV should answer one question clearly: how did this person make the organisation work better — at scale, under pressure, through change? If the answer is not obvious within the first third of the document, the CV has failed.

What makes a strong Chief Operations Officer CV

Operational transformation, not operational maintenance

A COO who kept things running is a good operations manager. A COO who restructured how things ran — better, faster, cheaper, more scalable — is the hire a company is looking for. The difference needs to be visible.

Cross-functional integration is the COO’s distinct skill

The COO is the executive who makes all parts of the business work together. Show where you integrated functions that were previously disconnected, where you resolved structural friction, and how the business performed as a result.

Financial accountability must be explicit

COOs in Singapore’s corporate environment typically own significant budget. Show the P&L, cost structure, or budget you were accountable for — and how it performed under your stewardship.

Show your CEO relationship honestly

The COO-CEO relationship defines the role. What you were accountable for, where you had independent authority, and where you deferred — this honest framing reads as maturity.

What to do

  • Lead with the organisation size, revenue, or operational scale you managed
  • Show at least two or three operational transformations with quantified outcomes
  • Demonstrate cross-functional programme or initiative leadership
  • Include board or investor relationship management if applicable
  • Show succession, talent development, and leadership pipeline building

What to avoid

  • Write a COO CV that reads as a senior operations manager CV with a better title
  • List functional responsibilities without any transformation narrative
  • Claim strategic input without showing where strategy became operational reality
  • Use ‘drove operational excellence’ without defining what changed and by how much
  • Ignore the commercial dimension of operations leadership

What a weak CV looks like

  • Operational scope described in vague terms: ‘oversaw all operations across the group’
  • No transformation narrative — only stability maintenance
  • Commercial and financial outcomes absent from a P&L-adjacent role
  • Leadership team development entirely absent from a C-suite CV
